After many years of rescuing elderly pugs. In 2008 we were asked to take in a little disabled Pug puppy who we named Horton. Horton changed our lives and touched the hearts of everyone who ever met him. The Joy of Horton is a celebration of a life well lived by a little pug who was small in stature but had the true spirit of a lion dwelling within him. Horton was cheeky and fearless and funny and wonderful. Chapter after chapter tells of the adventures he got up to living on a farm in the company of his seven elderly brothers and sisters. Horton stalked our sheep and got kissed by our Clydesdale, he took a huge amount of joy in every single day he was given. Horton shared our life for three glorious years before we lost him. This book is a story of strength and determination. Horton wasn’t a quitter; he faced things head on and got on with living the best life he could regardless of the body he had born into. Horton got pushed around our paddocks in a beautiful blue and white pram and called out to the sheep and horses as he went along, trying to encourage them to come over and play with him. On the ground he was bold and fearless and would shuffle up to our Clydesdale like he wasn’t even aware of the differences in sizes. It was the same with our flock of sheep. Horton would peep through the fence watching the livestock grazing and again shouting out to them to come closer. And as for the old pugs in the house, well they took on a new lease of life, some mothered him, some played with him and some jumped up on the couch to have a break from him.

The Joy of Horton is such an amazing story!! Andrea does a wonderful job describing Horton and his older brothers and sisters. I felt like I was right there amongst them as I was reading this!!! Andrea used wonderfully descriptive words when describing Hortons movements, like him bouncing up and down on his nappy when he was happy. In those words I was able to visualize him, the farm and everything in between!!!!I am so glad I came across this book and that Amazon "recommended it due to my history", because Andrea and her husband David did not get a publisher, they only made an ebook. So without Amazon's recommendation I never would have had the pleasure of knowing the story of Horton.
I was shocked that a breeder would put a beautiful pug (or any dog or cat for that matter) down because they have a deformity!!!!!!! Thank God for the rescue lady who first rescued Horton and then contacted Andrea about him, and thank The Lord that Andrea and David said yes!!! Horton had a wonderful and full life on the farm with his puggy brothers and sisters, Gerald the Clydesdale horse, some sheep and of course his precious mum and dad!!! His life was too short but he lived everyday to its full capacity!!! I was shocked and horrified at the emergency vet at the end!!! They are obviously in business only for the money and not for the love of the animals and that IS WRONG!!! It is backwards!!! I know if any business is going to succeed they have to be concerned about the bottom line, but the way they went about it seemed SO WRONG!!!! You can be for the animals first and the money second and still have a successful business!!!! Especially at a emergency vet clinic!!! This is when parents need to know more than ever that you care about their babies as much as they do and will do whatever it takes to help put their babies back together and feeling better and to put the parents hearts and minds at peace!!!!
Andrea lives my dream!!! We have had pugs ever since I was 6 and I am head over heels in love with the whole breed!!! When I was in HS we unfortunately had to give 2 of our 3 pugs to our local pug rescue because my grandmother, who was living with us, had Alzheimer's and it was getting really bad. My mom wasn't able to cope with the 3 pugs, 2 cats, getting me to school (which was 22 miles each direction), and with my grandmas additional needs. Don't get me wrong, my dad did A LOT but it was just too much. I like to think that Becky and Big Boy went to a wonderful home like Grace Farm!!!! But now I would LOVE to be able to return that favor and have a "gaggle of pugs" here!!! Last year we lost our oldest pug, Emily age 12, very sudden and six months later I lost my oldest kitty, Stoney age 14, of cancer. We currently have 3 pugs, a black one, Buddy age 5, And 2 fawns, Barney age 4 and Bogey age 3 plus 2 kitties, Rocksie and Pebbles age 3!!! I would have a pug retirement community in a heartbeat but would need to convince my parents since I currently live with them due to some serious health problems. But maybe one day it can happen, you never know what the Lord has planned!!! Until that time comes I will continue to read wonderful stories like Horton's and other precious animals!!! And I will think of the Comer's and their babies and say prayers for them.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!! Recommend

The Joy of Horton edition by Andrea Comer Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks Reviews
A wonderful book about a little dog who never gave up inspirational and funny, and written in an easy to read, homey style. Will be purchasing more as gifts we need more positive stories like this.
This book totally warmed my heart. Whether you hold a special place in your heart just for pugs or not - this book is worth the read.
What an amazing touching story of the two earthy Angels that shared their lives with this amazing pug puppy. I laughed, loved and cried with them. Actually felt as though I was there on the farm enjoying each experience. This truly is a must read!
I fell in love with Horton immediately years ago when I saw a picture of him on Facebook. Through this, I have come to love Andrea Comer and her husband, Dave. They give their lives to a motley crew of eldely and disabled pugs, and enlighten and awe all of those with the pleasure of watching. The Comers have changed my world and many others, one pug at a time. Be prepared to laugh and cry and fall in love this amazing little guy.
If only the world were full of more Andrea Comers and Dave Comers, it would be such a loving place. This is a story of a love between gentle humans and a gentle puppy. No matter that Horton was born disabled, mo matter that he couldn't walk well and run free; all that mattered was he was one of God's creations and could be loved for what he was. It takes special people for this, and I am honored to call the Comers not only friends but heroes, Horton's Heroes. Lovely book
I just finished reading "The Joy of Horton" and I'm more than a blubbering mess! Poignant and beautiful, the writing style is so personal and heart-felt, you feel like you're traversing the journey right alongside Andrea; experiencing and feeling each moment just as intensely as she is. This is a story that has deeply affected me on many levels, and it will never leave me. Anyone who considers their animal companions their children will relate to this story and may even be positively changed by it forever. Fall in love with Horton and there's no looking back!
I enjoyed this book as much as any I have ever read in my life. Andrea Comer does a fine job of presenting her beloved pug son, Horton--his life and the nearly-blinding pain of his death at such a young age. She and her husband truly lost a son. I understand, Andrea...and it brought a bit of peace to me as I thought, "Here at last is someone who understands my own heart and spirit and how it was when my own pug son, Tyler, left this world." Forgive me, please, Andrea, if that is one of those wrong things to say...and I know it is selfish on my part. But I am eternally grateful to you for telling this story and letting me--and many others like me--remember that there are others who do understand to the depths of their hearts and their spirits and their love.
Anyone who loves animals needs this book.
