Of the other books which I have used I should like to quote, above all, Ernst Mach's classical Mechanics (which has appeared in English), and then the very lucidly written volume by E. T. Whittaker, A History of the Theories of Aether and Electricity (london, Longmans, Green Co., and the comprehensive account of the Theory of Relativity given by Hermann Weyl in his Space, Time, Matter (english translation published by Messrs. Methuen 81 Co., Ltd., Anyone who wishes to penetrate further into Einstein's doctrines must study the latter work. It is impossible to enumerate the countless books and essays from which I have drawn more or less directly. In conformity with the character of the book I have refrained from giving references.

I read this book more than 6 years ago from a local library, and was awed by the simplistic treatment and yet complete comprehension that it endowed on me. It builds all premises and theories ab initio, and slowly, gradually but inexorably builds a hypothesis that culminates into Einstein's theory.Mind you, the book is NOT for the casual reader, but it is NOT only for academia either. A fair knowledge of high school physics and mathematics will probably be required if you really want to reach into the depths of this book. Dig deep and you'll come away well rewarded.
I promised myself I'll buy this book one day when I'll be able to dedicate the time to read this book. I haven't completed this copy, but then I don't need to read it again to write this review. The impression that I have from the earlier reading is etched firmly in my mind and that's where this review comes from.

teacher must learn
before teaching
Warning the January 2010 printing is not a book it's just unformatted text printed with no diagrams. It's completely worthless.
The actual book is pretty good. I lent my copy to a friend, and never got it back. I wanted a copy for reference, so I tried to order it here. But what I got is bound pages of worthless computer printout.
This book is not all it's cracked up to be. It is NOT good for a layman, even a layman who is good at math, was good at physics in high school, and is fascinated by the topic. This book is probably enjoyable for someone who already knows everything in it, who wants a nice summary/review. But for a non-physicist, the explanations are simply not clear. Important steps in logic are skipped. Simple things are made difficult. Time after time, I have to go online to find clearer explanations of concepts. Then I go back and re-read Born and wonder why he had to make it so difficult.
In this book noted physicist and colleage of Einstein reviews physics up to the mid 1900's, in a most clear,
careful and clear manner
The mathematics are high school level, easily grasped. The organization of the book is admiirable, and leaves
nothing out. In fact, this book is the one I wish my high school and college had used as a text on physics
the reader gets two bangs for the buck, a complete and clear review of physics, and a nice introduction to Relativity.
This book is highly recommended both for students and for adults of all ages who want a great overview of physics.
The first 2/3 of the book is devoted to an overview of mechanics, optics and electromagnetism and how developments in each led to the ether theory being abandoned. The last 1/3 is relativity. The notation is a little alien (ie K for force, b for acceleration, etc) and some of the explanations are more complicated than they need to be (eg derivation of lorentz transformations is presented much more clearly in other books). The fact many concepts are explained differently here than in other books does offer a different angle and a bit more illumination on some topics.
A good book.
At times notation can be a distraction, at other times notation can cause confusion, as in E&M most notably. Max Born's book is a gem and if you can get around the mild distractions and focus on the ideas then you may even get around the paradoxes in Relatively, where "common sense" is a distraction.
Some gifted people can write and explain well the most complex ideas some cannot. Max Born succeeds one of the best popular books on Relativity.
The edition of the book depicted and described in the details is the 1962 Dover Edition. Instead, I received a public-domain university press copy called "Scholar's Select", which is photocopied from the original, has photocopied handwriting in it, and is of poor quality compared to the original Dover Edition. Beware the generic knock-offs!
